If someone has chronic pain or acute symptoms from a recent injury and he is looking for non-drug treatment options then one such option is Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy machine. This article is about PEMF therapy and provides guidelines about how to buy a suitable device for home use.
PEMF therapy works by directing small amounts of energy toward a specific part of your body via a specialized magnetic device. This therapy is used to treat acute and chronic pain by helping to reduce inflammation. It is a general conception that PEMF therapy improves circulation and cellular functioning by increasing the body’s ability to release nitric oxide. PEMF therapy has been used in the treatment of acute pain from injuries, osteoarthritis, and chronic low back pain. Depending on the condition being treated, a doctor may also prescribe a PEMF device for home use. In considering PEMF devices, we should consider the following points.
Values of intensity and frequency:
The depth of the magnetic field is defined as intensity. It is expressed in Gauss. The intensity and therapy time are not related to each other. Increasing the intensity does not reduce the therapy time. Some intensities are more suitable than others, depending on the type of disease. As an example, a high intensity device is suitable to treat a fracture that is struggling to consolidate. Similarly, the case of a fracture with plaster is different because the distance between the emission solenoid and affected area is greater which demands the use of higher intensity.
The low-frequency PEMF therapy, maximum 150 Hz, applies a magnetic field with medium-high intensity. It is suitable for treating hard tissue and delays in bone calcification. It is also indicated for pain therapy and in general for restoring the correct functional balance of cells. It is therefore also effective in treating soft tissues. The high-frequency PEMF therapy is based on the emission of small packets of high-frequency radio waves, between 18 and 900 MHz, but at low intensity. They are most suitable for treating soft tissue disorders. It is effective for pain therapy.
The intensity of the magnetic field is significantly reduced as the distance from the area to be treated increases. Therefore, the ideal condition is to have a contact between the electromagnetic wave emitting source and the skin of the patient. The PEMF therapy applicators currently available on the market are now very comfortable and suitable for a wide variety of therapy methods.
Fitting of an applicator:
An important consideration is the fitting of the applicator. Once it is worn it must be firmly wrapped around the affected part. It must be comfortable so that it must not be too painful for the patient. An example of a very good applicator is the one consisting of two or three solenoids inserted inside adjustable elastic bands therapy. They can be easily adapted to most peripheral areas of the body without too much difficulty.
For treating the entire body, there are magnetic mats. These mats may contain many solenoids and emit magnetic fields over a large surface area. They very effectively cover the entire area to be treated. For applications which require high intensity, there are physically larger sized solenoids. They provide high intensity treatment. There should be an option for a wide choice of programs within the PEMF therapy device.
A program should be able to be customized according to the instruction of the doctor. There are pathologies that take a long time or it is often the case that a person suffers from several pathologies at the same time. Single-program devices can often be useless in the future because your needs have changed.
We therefore recommend that you opt for a device with several pre-set programs. The device must have options to change the frequency and intensity values over time. For after-sales service and support, ask the company about how technical assistance is available if the device needs some repairs. Make it clear from the company what cost will be involved in that repair and how much time it will take to resume the function of the device.
