Moving a family member into a care home is one of the hardest things to do as an adult. Finally accepting the fact that a parent or elderly family member needs more care than you can provide is hard but a time will always come when this is the case.
Today we are taking a look at the best ways to make assisted living care feel more like home and ensure that it is a comfortable and relaxing place for your family member to live. Here are some helpful tips and tricks for making a care home feel more like home.
1. Adorn with photos
The best thing you can do for a loved one who has had to move into care is make the home feel as familiar as possible. The easiest way to do this is by hanging up lots of photos of your family and pets. This will ensure that your family member always feels like you are with them and they will always feel a little sense of home.
2. Bring their favourite bedding
When moving from their home into care, your loved one won’t be able to bring everything they own with them and this can make it hard to create a space which feels homely. One thing you should definitely bring into the room is your relative’s favourite bedding set so that they can drift off to sleep every night underneath a cosy blanket and on a soft pillow with their favourite design on.
3. Decorate with their favourite colours
If you are allowed, a good way to make the room feel more like a home is to paint and decorate the room with their favourite colours. Most care homes and assisted living facilities will allow a fair amount of decoration so if you are able to do this for your family member it will feel more like the room was made for them and them alone.
4. Take some furniture
Although you won’t be able to bring everything from home to the new care Home this year, it is still a good idea to try and bring a few items which will make your family members feel at home. They might have a favourite mirror or chair at home and if you can bring this into the space it will make a world of difference to your family member and how comfortable they feel this year.
5. Create a hosting area
One of the things your family member might miss the most if they go into care is the chance to host family get togethers for the propel they love. However, just because they are in a home doesn’t mean that they still can’t take part in hosting some key events. You can create a seating area in the home where they are able to host friends and family and this will allow your family member to feel much more at home and much more independent, and it can enrich their quality of life a lot.
