Whether you’re going on holiday in Australia or elsewhere in the world, it can be difficult to find a place that will accommodate your dog. Many pet owners end up leaving their pets with a friend or in a kennel every time they go away on a vacation.
However, there’s no reason why you can’t bring your dog with you on holiday. Many areas are famously dog-friendly, allowing pets into shops and restaurants and providing amenities for pets and their owners.
We’ve looked at five of our favourite dog-friendly travel destinations here.
1. Toronto, Canada
The biggest city in Canada is also one of the most pet-friendly places in the world. If you want to go on a big-city break and bring your dog along for the journey, Toronto is one of your best options.
Among Toronto’s best-known tourist attractions are the CN Tower and the Art Gallery of Toronto. You can also visit the city’s Ice Hockey Hall of Fame, a must-see if you’re interested in Ice hockey.
One thing you should note about Toronto is how extreme its seasons are. Unlike Vancouver, Canada’s other big tourist city, Toronto gets scorching summers and icy winters. If you or your dog are especially sensitive to hot or cold weather, it might be good to pick the time of your visit carefully.
The seasons are also relevant to your pet. Toronto’s offerings in terms of canine hospitality take off in the summer months. There are around 60 dog parks in the city that will allow your pet to roam without a lease, and one of these even has a beach. Additionally, many cafes and restaurants open their doors to dogs during the summer months.
If your dog likes to be treated like royalty, Toronto in the summer will be the best vacation they’ve ever had. If you live within driving distance, pack up your roof rack basket, and get moving!
2. San Francisco, USA
San Francisco is one of the most liberal cities on earth. It is thought of by many as the home of the LGBT culture, and its inhabitants are always ahead of the curve when it comes to social progress.
Luckily for pet owners, this attitude extends to dogs in many different ways. San Francisco is much more welcoming of dogs than more conservative American cities.
The city has several off-leash parks, as well as beaches where dogs are welcome to roam. If you’re there during the summer, you should check out a couple of San Francisco’s dog festivals.
If you have a smaller dog that doesn’t mind a little adventure, you could cycle the Golden Gate Bridge with your pooch in the basket. You can rent bikes in the city centre, before setting off over the bridge and going for a meal or drinks in Sausalito.
3. Amsterdam, Netherlands
Like San Francisco, Amsterdam is famous for its laissez-faire attitude to many things. One of these things is pets; your dog will find a warmer welcome in Amsterdam than in most major European cities.
Unlike in other places, public transport is open to dogs in Amsterdam. You’ll have to buy your pooch a ticket for longer trains, but this is still a cheaper option than renting a car or taking a taxi.
An even cheaper dog-friendly transport option is the bicycle. Cyclists are everywhere in Amsterdam, and almost every bike has a basket on the front that will have plenty of space for a smaller dog.
In terms of accommodation, your pooch will be well looked after. Some hotels offer luxury dogsitting services, where your dog will have access to toys and a comfortable bed if you want to explore the city by yourself for the day. This is an excellent option if you want to check out some of the tourist attractions that don’t cater to dogs, such as the Anne Frank museum.
4. Sydney, Australia
If you’re in Australia and you fancy staying closer to home for this year’s holiday, Sydney could be just the place for you. It is the largest Australian city with the country’s most famous landmarks and a renowned vacation spot for dog lovers.
There are several dog-friendly beaches and parks across the city, as well as restaurants that welcome dogs.
5. Tel Aviv, Israel
Israel might not be the country that springs to mind when you think of holiday destinations. However, there’s an awful lot to like about Tel Aviv, especially if you’re a dog owner.
You’ll struggle to find a country that’s richer in history than Israel. It’s home to many of the most important religious sites in the world. While armed conflict is ongoing between Israel and neighbouring countries like Palestine, visiting Tel Aviv is not considered dangerous.
Tel Aviv has one dog for every seventeen human residents, giving it the densest canine population of any city on earth. The city has dozens of public dog parks and two beaches where dogs are allowed to roam freely, even in the water. The local government makes many allowances for dogs, including funding many shelters for homeless animals.
Picking the Right Destination for You and Your Dog in 2020
Picking the right place to go on holiday is never easy. With the decreasing price of travel and new accommodation options like Airbnb, the amount of choice at your disposal can be overwhelming.
However, not every travel destination offers the same level of hospitality to dogs as they do to humans. If you want to bring your pet on a trip with you, you should pick from a destination like one of the five above.
