Southern California is one of the world’s most sought after vacation destinations, both in the U.S. as well as internationally. Whether it’s the miles of sandy beaches, the ability to ski and surf in the same day, or seeing the Hollywood sign, Southern California seems to have just about everything someone could be looking for on their vacation.
While the list of places to go would take hours to review, here are arguably the best attractions for different styles of vacation seekers: adventure, family trips, scenic, architecture/art, and relaxing.
Adventure – Shark Cages (San Diego)
Going into a shark cage is something that can be done in various parts of the world, but not always with Great White Sharks, and not where they are rumored to breed which takes things to the next level.
There are many different companies that do this excursion (with a range of prices). They all include being taken out to the middle of the ocean and being lowered into a shark cage where the sharks will come right up to you. This is the ultimate adrenaline rush of things to do in San Diego.
Honorable mention: Ski and Surf (Bear Lake/Huntington Beach), Mojave desert ATV, and NASCAR experience at Auto Cub Speedway.
With any of these adventure activities, it is a good idea to have plenty of insurance and a good attorney just in case things turn south. Yes, you sign waivers, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still fight should things go wrong. It is also important to realize that not all laws (national and international) are going to be the same everywhere. Checking these can help in making decisions.
Family Trip – Disneyland
Yes, this may seem stereotypical, but there is a reason that Disneyland is the standard bearer for all theme parks everywhere. Also, Disneyland is the original Disney park and has the true nostalgia rides with Dumbo, It’s a Small World, and of course, Space Mountain.
While the costs are higher, and the crowds may be bigger than other parks, many feel it is worth it to experience “The most magical place on Earth.”
To save money, you can join the Vacation Club and use points so you can make the most out of every penny. Make sure to learn more about the DVC buying process and how to use your points effectively. This is an excellent way to save money and have a more relaxed and enjoyable vacation with your family.
Honorable Mention: Santa Monica Pier, Universal Studios, and San Diego Zoo
Scenic – Hot Air Balloon
For some, this may appear to be more on the adventure side, but for those who don’t have a fear of heights (at all), this is the perfect scenic excursion. There are many different options in Southern California with how this can work, whether that be in orchards, over the ocean, or just getting a great view of the sunrise over the Los Angeles skyline.
Hot air balloons are becoming a relatively rare excursion worldwide, so taking advantage of this opportunity is a must. Be aware, compared to other scenic tours, this is likely the most expensive, but again, when else can you be suspended 2,500 feet above the gound?
Honorable Mention – Joshua Tree National Park, Driving the Coastline, Hiking Bear Mountain, and Thousand Steps Beach
Architecture/Art – Hollywood
This one is a bit tough because there are a lot of different tastes in this kind of trip. The reason that Hollywood comes up on top, however, is because of how much there is to do in the area.
There is the TCL Chinese Theater, Dolby Theater, Walk of Fame, Madame Tussauds Hollywood Wax Museum, the Hollywood Museum, and of course, the Hollywood sign. And if you get lucky, you may even run into someone!
Again, while this may be on more of the entertainment side of art/architecture, the sheer amount of places to visit and see puts it on top.
Honorable Mention: Chinatown, Alcatraz, California Tower, and Getty Center
Relaxing – Laguna Beach
Let’s face it, Southern California is really crowded, even without the tourists. If the perfect vacation is to just sit back and relax, Laguna Beach is the perfect spot. While the main beach is often crowded and mayhem like the rest of Southern California, the actual beach goes on for more than seven miles and has at least 30 coves. There are plenty of spots to find peace and quiet.
Laguna Beach is rated high because of the calm waters, access to amenities, and nature trails, as well as excursions for those who are looking for water sports. This dog friendly beach is also near some higher income neighbourhoods which means that in general, the beaches are kept very clean and safe.
Honorable Mention: Paradise Cove Malibu, Old Town Orange, Monterey Aquarium, and Vineyard trails/hikes
California Has it All
In case it has not been made clear already, there is something for everyone in California. The most important tip may be to have a set plan but be ready to change it. Without a plan, the traffic and the amount of people will be overwhelming. Being flexible to change plans, however, may be just as important since there are surely going to be activities and options that come up that you’ve never heard of.
