3 Things To Do Before Downsizing To A Smaller Home

There comes a time when many of us feel the need to downsize.

It could be because our children have flown the nest and we have more space than we know what to do with. Or it could be for financial reasons that we find ourselves looking at things like these Latitude Margaritaville homes for sale, as a smaller home can sometimes mean lower utility bills. And it could also be because we suddenly find ourselves living alone if our relationship status changes.

And if you’re planning on downsizing, it might be that you’re relating to one of the reasons given. Whatever the case, we hope everything goes well with your house move.

But before you close the doors of your old home for good, here are a few things you need to do before leaving your sprawling house.

De-clutter your belongings

As we discussed in this article at https://www.onyamagazine.com, moving to a new home can give you the chance to minimise. And especially if you have a lot of items in your home, you will need to minimise, as a smaller house can fall prey to clutter if you don’t have enough space for everything.

When going through the items in your home, consider what you might want to keep. Put these to one side so you don’t accidentally get rid of them. And for anything else, sell, recycle, or donate them. You will then have fewer items to carry with you during the house move, and in theory, you will have more space in your new home to put your belongings. Still, the next suggestion should also be advised.

Measure your larger items

You will understand the importance of measuring, we’re sure. If you’re moving to a smaller house, there could be some pieces of furniture that are unsuitable for your new home. They might be too big for certain rooms, and even if they do fit, you might be left with very little floor space afterwards.

So, before you start loading things onto the moving van, measure up those bulkier items. Then ask for the floor plan of your new home from the realtor or visit your new house with your measuring tape. For things you aren’t able to take with you, consider leaving them in the house for the new owner (if they agree to it). You might be able to raise the asking price if you do. Alternatively, consider the next step if you would rather not sell or donate your larger items just yet.

Rent storage space

Don’t want to throw away that vintage table? Unsure about what to do with some of your other belongings? Fine, you don’t need to purge everything just because you have limited space. Rent a storage unit for any surplus items you own as you will then have time to consider what the next step might be for your extra belongings. It might be that you do decide to sell them on at some point. Or you might be able to donate them to friends or family members if they are one day in need of extra furniture for their homes.

Here’s one self-storage example that could be considered: https://redlandcitystorage.com.au/

These are just a few practical steps to consider before you downsize. Consider each one, as you will make life easier for yourself if you do, both before and after your house move.

Thanks for reading, and good luck with your move!
