Under Milk Wood + Giveaway

As limited as my ability to sympathise with an actor is, I gather it’s difficult to arrive onstage and be someone else convincingly – it’s why my mother cringes when Hugh Grant plays Hugh Grant in every film he’s ever graced. Zoe Norton Lodge in Under Milk Wood is, therefore, another breed of artist entirely.  Appearing at the Sidetrack Theatre in Marrickville for two weeks, Lodge engaged with Dylan Thomas’ sixty-four character-thick love poem to the Welsh countryside with a subtle elegance and fierce mastery; of both Thomas’ village, and her stage. You read correctly – forget playing one character, Lodge engaged sixty-four, and whilst this feat alone boasts an impressive number, it was Lodge’s seamless sashaying between, and distinct characterisation of each habitant of Milk Wood that cast the audience beneath a blanket of intent silence. This show is warm, lyrical, and tailored exquisitely. The set is equally as marvellous; ghostly model houses and boats flickering from their perches in the air, or leaving shadows against wistful backdrops – a multimedia installation invented and collaborated by Director Vanessa Hughes.
