Hey Melbourne, welcome to the sixties!
Set in 1960’s Baltimore, Hairspray follows suburban teen Tracy Turnbald – a girl as curvaceous as she is vivacious. From her dreams to her bouffant, Tracy lives life large in an era where diminutive was the style du jour.
While lusting after her chance to be named ‘Miss Teen Hairspray’ on the achingly cool Corny Collins Show, Tracy encounters an array of discrimination, which is handled in the only way musical theatre knows how – through bright harmonies and seamless dance numbers.
From the undeniably lovable Jaz Flowers as Tracy Turnblad, to her swoon-worth beau Link Larkin, played by So You Think You Can Dance alum Jack Chambers, director David Atkins has assembled a stellar cast who shine as brightly as their lacquered hair-dos.
Stunning costuming and an ingenious digital set, complete with stylised populuxe graphics, transports the audience into the pages of their favourite retro comic book while Jason Coleman’s breath-takingly flawless choreography energises and enthuses the entire theatre with infectiously delightful dance numbers.
Embedded in the warm glow of nostalgia, Hairspray brings its audience a brightly coloured message of equality and respect. United by a single dance floor, the big-hearted Hairspray preaches the importance of love, diversity and extra-hold styling products.
The unmissable Hairspray is now showing at the Princess Theatre, Melbourne. Tickets and further information are available at Ticketek.
