It’s performances such as the NICA’s latest production, Leap of Faith: Circus in Motion that sees Melbourne earn its title as Australia’s cultural hot spot, with art and creativity flying well outside of the lines.
At last night’s NICA opening night, an eager crowd was wowed by a unique, two-part performance by 24 final year Bachelor of Circus Arts students, showcasing their aptitude for creative fragility and physical strength.
And with the former Cirque du Soleil Artistic Director, Matthew Jessner, injecting his imagination and wealth of experience into the performance, the high level of skill, synchronicity and artistic ingenuity was to be expected.
From the swinging trapeze to aerial hoops and juggling, the ensemble proved that no challenge was too great, moving with ease, enthusiasm and grace.
The most beautiful part about the Leap of Faith production was the purposeful ambiguity and disjointed nature of each new performance, allowing the audience to develop their own distinctly different interpretation and personal experience with each unfolding performance.
The artistic freedom of ideas within the show was an art in itself and I highly recommend that you head along and see how contemporary circus performance has progressed, particularly with the accompanying video projections and atmospheric sound landscapes.
The show runs for 90 minutes including a 20 minute interval.
NICA offers Australia’s only Bachelor of Circus Arts, accredited by Swinburne University of Technology in Prahran.
