Frankenstein, often referred to as the first science fiction novel even written, is now on stage in Melbourne. The creature, not monster, is revealed in this absorbing and entertaining spectacle of theatre accompanied by a real and timeless story. The small cast who cleverly switch characters mid-scene propel the rich story forward with brilliant acting. The tale includes profound themes of the role of science, the place of the arts, nurturing life and understanding our artificial creations. It is searingly relevant.
Everything that you could want from the story is satisfyingly brought to life in this large-scale production. Think The Cursed Child, with powerful music, sound FX and digital displays to cleverly give the illusion of grand space or deep and overwhelming madness.
Victor Frankenstein, played by Darcy Brown, skilfully illuminates the doctor as an ordinary person with a high IQ, passionate about science, whilst achieving great feats. He becomes tormented in the depths of his passion by his failings. This poignantly reminds us about isolation, that we could do better with wholistic approaches. In science fiction we see ourselves, our choices are reflected.
Jeremiah May convincing plays the equally tormented “creature”. May’s use of mannerisms are a master class of getting into character. The wise and nurturing Elizabeth, Frankenstein’s bride to be, is played by Chloé Zuel who captures the fanciful role effortlessly.
This production does not hold back on the process of how you might grotesquely create artificial, organic life. This fun performance is carried by excellent acting and glossy production elements. It’s possibly for a younger crowd, who are going to be responsible for the next wave of scientific discovery. Consider going along for an electrifying night of wonder and a little terror.
