Alexis Dubus doesn’t know much about cars or girls, except that he likes the red ones. He also has a passport that’s just about full. Each stamp tells a story of a girl and a car he’s shared time with on the road. From a brief encounter on a naked bike ride to hitching truck rides across Europe with his uni girlfriend to pining for lost love whilst pushing a broken down van in the Nevada desert, Dubus has anecdotes from the road to rival Keroac.
Being his first spoken-word show, Cars and Girls takes Dubus into uncharted lands, and his gift for rhyme and rhythm equals his comic talent. His journey is an epic one, featuring lightsabers, burning effigies, UFOs, nude lycra, a cow and a girl who can’t wink. While this stranger-than-fiction tale alone would be enough to have you in stitches, Dubus is a master storyteller and clever wordsmith and the real humour of the tale lies in the telling. His witty turn of phrase combined with deft control of rhythm and pace makes for a real joy ride.
Coming to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival all the way from the UK, Cars and Girls was named one of the 25 top-rated shows of the Edinburgh Fringe. It is a tribute to those often tough truths the road teaches young wanderers about life, love and what it means to find your perfect travelling companion.
Alexis Dubus: Cars and Girls is on at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival until 20 April. For more information and tickets, click here.
