- The Mamas
Do you like Soul? Do you like Spice? Do you like Funk? Do you like four part harmonies that manage to evoke 70s disco goodness and disassemble the patriarchy at the same time? Well then you’ll love the Mamas. They combine cheeky lyrics about getting some with vintage beats and four distinct yet unified voices. Fave song: Ain’t No Shame from their album ‘Juicy’. Feel good funky music at its finest.
- Max Lawrence
I’ve never done drugs, but I think ML’s music sounds like what I’d imagine an acid trip to feel like. Listening to celestial tracks like Gasoline and Remedy makes me feel like I’m in that weird Charlie and the Chocolate factory scene. You know the one – where they’re speeding through that dark tunnel and being shown disturbing random images. There’s also poignant introspective soft tracks like Icarus and Fountain, which are perfect if you’re out walking children in nature.
- Tanya George
Aside from that amazing hair, one thing that is special about TG is her vocal looping, especially on tracks like ‘Writing Machine’ and ‘My Hymn’ which are exclusively vocal productions. I love that her music is always chock full of interesting eclectic harmonies and the girl definitely knows how to write a catchy hook for sure. When Miss Rona decides to vacate Melbourne, you can catch Tanya busking all the time on Bourke St.
- Via
At the end of the day, we all look to music to emote and we want to listen to songs that pull at our heart strings. Via is such a beautiful songwriter and a lyrical genius. Her duet with Hui on the song ‘Breathe Again’ gives me the ugly cries every time. Pure and honest lyricism, soaring yet gentle vocals, amazing storytelling. Brb I need some tissues.
- Thorne
Now it’s time to get funky. Thorne is a sexy funk machine. His songs are absolute bops and I always have the best time dancing at his gigs. I love his upbeat tracks like ‘Right’, ‘Body Ache’ and ‘Loved You’, but I think his true soul shines through in the acoustic songs like ‘DNA’ and ‘God Made Man’. His vocals are filled with colourful subtleties and go straight to your heart. If you are having a bad day, do yourself a favour and check out his song ‘Do You Wanna’ for a good time 😉
