They say you can’t keep a good man down, and critically-acclaimed Melbourne alt-country singer/songwriter Rich Webb is proof positive of that old adage, with new single Brunswick St arriving as his first piece of new music for 2023. Brunswick St arrives just a few months after the release of his latest album, RIGHT!, with the uplifting, driving track presenting itself as an equally powerful ode to the Melbourne street which bears its name.
Brunswick St is a love letter penned to the Fitzroy capital of live music. It has the vibe of jamming out a Paul Kelly ode to a location à la From St Kilda To Kings Cross, but with the flair of Bruce Springsteen in those real energetic hooks that are thrown in. It really is Rich’s best work! AND has already been picked up for some spins on Double J!
Rich shares his top five places to chill in Melbourne this winter…
1. Bar Open
My single is about ‘Brunswick St’, in Fitzroy, so I’ve got to start right here on the drag. Bar Open has a magnificent fire downstairs, has live music most of the week and is open until 3am. Don’t need to say more.
A special occasion spot. I don’t live far away from here and we’ve had a few special times at this fine establishment. Apparently it used to be an illegal gambling den years ago and still has the old TVs in place they used to check the doors. Another ripping fire right in the centre with good-times-winter written all over it.
3. Tin Pot Cafe
Another in my vicinity, and I love walking above any other form of transport. The Tin Pot has been a bit of an institution around here for a while. It’s the place I’ll take a mate if we fancy going for a walk to get out of the house. Lovely people watching spot through the windows here and the food is always fab.
So maybe you wanna warm things up with some perky, fabulous food? Panda Hot Pot is one of my fave Chinese joints in Melbourne and a place that is totally confident with the chillis. I love it – do yourself a favour.
Or maybe you wanna warm yourself up by watching a cracking show in a packed out venue? The Northcote Social Club is one of my all-time fave rooms to play and is a brilliant place to see up-and-coming artists or those that are less mainstream. It’s usually packed, and happy, recyclable, human-generated warmth is the best right?
