Montana Sharp has freshly released an emphatic new track Something Wicked; an edgier offering from the innovative Melbourne art-work dynamo following her coming-of-age 2022 debut EP Blood Moon, but one entirely in keeping with the ever-growing powerhouse status Montana commands. Putting a modern spin on the symbolism of wickedness and villainy via the accompanying music video for Something Wicked, this new track from Montana Sharp is an enticing blend of empowerment and soulful temptations.
1. Abbey Rose – Abbey (who is also Saucy Mama in the Melbourne girl band The Mamas) has runs for days and an unmatched sense of sass and wit. Her tracks such as Not Interested, and That’s your Problem showcase an innovative rhythmic and lyrical prowess as well as a voice that can melt butter. I’ve caught many of Abbey’s sets all around Melbourne and I’m always bopping along. Also, her TikTok is bloody hilarious and I in particular enjoy her daily vlogs about her gigging life. You can check it out here: https://www.tiktok.com/@abbeyrosemusic
2. Kitty Rae – Kitty is currently taking Melbourne by a storm, and this dark pop artist is a work-horse! She’s gunning for it full steam ahead. Her vocals are smouldering and her beats pop almost as much as her pink hair. You can catch her all around Melbourne and follow her on TikTok here: https://www.tiktok.com/@kittyraemusic Fave track: Kitty’s sadder spin on 9-5 (because as she once said, it’s not really fun working 9-5!) 3. Dreaming Soda – I might be biased because these guys have opened for me a couple of times, but I’m obsessed with Dreaming Soda. This Melbourne pop duo write songs about all things nostalgia, from Pokemon, arcade games, and even Barbies. In their production, you can hear all of those delicious electronic “bloopy” sounds that take you right back to the early 2000s. Lead singer Ella also sells awesome comic books at their gigs, so multi talented! Check them out here: https://open.spotify.com/artist/1uXFipsE5G5rXDPxxmjNK9
4. Emma Volard – Queen of cool Emma Volard has an untouchable sense of soul, and what I like about her artistry most is how she always speaks up for world issues both on and off stage. Her stand out song Feminity is a highlight for me, not only do the anthemic lyrics speak to all women but it’s so musically sophisticated as well, from the oscillating string introduction to the rhythm break down later on. Go Emma!
5. Y-pop – this is a new girl group that I’m actually a band member of! I couldn’t possibly exclude them from this list. We recently launched Y-pop as an all Jewish and all female girl group putting a fresh spin on the classics from our culture. We sing in FOUR languages: English, Hebrew, Arabic, and Yiddish. Think Pitch Perfect meets Fiddler on the Roof, what more could you want? We’ll sing at your wedding or your circumcision (just kidding.. unless…?)
