You’re a DJ and producer. How hard was it forging a career in the music industry?
Working in the music industry definitely takes hard work and perseverance. I was extremely lucky early on to work alongside some of Australia’s best DJ’s and producers at Onelove (leading Electronic Dance Music label), which helped improve my music. Establishing this great network from the beginning has been key to my growth in the industry.
Ultimately, the hard work and long hours are worth it when you’re doing something you love.
You recently launched ‘Lights Sound Music’, incorporating original music design and production for brands and businesses. Tell us more about it.
I have always had a passion for music and fashion, so ‘Lights Fashion Music’ allows be to combine the two. ‘Lights Fashion Music’ is a consultancy business that provides music solutions for businesses, particular those in the fashion industry. I regularly DJ at events and launches and have been involved with the L’oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival for a couple of years running. I love these gigs and felt it was a great niche to explore further.
On top of this, ‘Lights Fashion Music’ includes a blog/online magazine that focuses on the moments when music and fashion collide. This will soon incorporate look books and interviews with other artists about their individual sense of style and fashion.
You’ve been a DJ at Australia’s biggest music festivals? Is there one in particular that stands out?
For me, there is nothing more exciting then DJ’ing at a festival. I love playing to huge crowds and have people respond to my music. My favorite festival of the year would have to be Summadayze at the Sidney Myer Music bowl in Melbourne. I was lucky enough to play on the main stage at 6pm after one of my favorite artists, Boys Noize, playing in my home city to around 20,000 people – it was an amazing experience.
What’s on the agenda for you for the rest of 2013?
I‘m currently in studio mode, preparing for the next release with Jam Xpress (Murphy’s collaborative outfit with DJ Jorj). Our latest track with Static Revenger is due out mid-June. I’m also collaborating with some other amazing artists and can’t wait to share my latest music.
I’m also still in the process of setting up ‘Lights Fashion Music’ which is very exciting.
What does being Australian mean to you?
We live in the best country in the world and I count myself very lucky to be an Australian. I love the music and culture here and Australia’s dance music scene is one of the worlds best. Nothing beats coming home to Melbourne after travelling or touring. I love the fashion, food, coffee and the footy.
Where are your favorite places to travel to and holiday in Australia?
There are so many amazing places to travel in Australia. I love the beach so relaxing in Byron Bay or Palm Cove in Northern Queensland is my idea of the perfect holiday. I’m yet to go to Central Australia so I hope to travel there one day.
