Dulux has partnered with award-winning West Australian children’s author and illustrator, Kylie Howarth, to release a limited-edition colouring book, A Lick of Colour.
The 20-page book features the Dulux dog on his adventures – capturing the day in the life of a dog. Dulux Brand Manager, Romy Nayagam says that “we wanted to create a fun project that would engage the whole family in colour implementation – and what better way than with a colouring book for the kids and a home DIY project for the adults,” Romy says. “The next step was finding an author we could work with to help bring our vision to life!
“Kylie encourages creativity in children, particularly of lower primary age, evoking colour in unique and inspired ways – much like Dulux does with its homeowners, making this the perfect partnership.”
The Perth-based author-illustrator is no stranger to the juggles some parents face, raising two young children of her own, all the while writing new books, and hosting literary and art workshops for primary school students around the country.
Kylie often uses her books and workshops to pave a way for communication, creativity and conscious thinking for young children – with a strong focus on environment/nature.
“A large part of my philosophy is encouraging children to think outside the box, and when permitted, colour outside of the lines!” Kylie says.
“I often omit elements that may restrict imagination in little creators. For example, I often leave skin and hair uncoloured in my books, to allow the reader to envisage themselves in the role and often use animals as key protagonists as young readers relate well to creatures (be it sea or land).”
Several primary schools were treated to a sneak peek of the book, as Kylie hosted a selection of workshops with the prep and year one students during her recent Melbourne book-signing visit. The children were also lucky enough to meet the Dulux dog himself as he tagged along for pats and pictures, and of course, to inspire the students who were tasked with drawing the dog.
Kylie is the author of iconic children’s titles such as, Chip, Chip the Lifeguard, Fish Kid chapter book series, Fish Jam and 1, 2, Pirate Stew. She’s received numerous accolades for her books and even had her books Chip and Chip The Lifeguard read on Play School Story Time by Kat Stewart and Matt Okine (TV personalities).
