I have enjoyed reading this novel since I was young (now in my late twenties) and still have a copy of it sitting on my bookshelf, which was handed down to me by my mother and is falling apart from having been read so many times (I most recently re-read it over the Christmas break). I was (and still am) also a fan of the movie and love visiting Hanging Rock when I can, although my visits are usually once a year at most. I'm by no means an expert on what it takes for something to be considered a classic, however I'm of the belief that as it was written around 45 years ago in 1967 and is still being read today, it rightfully falls into the classics category.... just my humble opinion though!

Absolutely never compromise on toilet paper. It's non-negotiable. I don't even care if I can't afford the food to eventually use it.

In much the same way as Richard Dawkins' says that there is no such thing as "Christian children", rather there are "children of Christian parents", your cultural identity is ultimately something you decide and make for yourself.

Ultimately this is what leads to there being Indian-Australians, Samoan-Australians, Chinese-Australians and so on - as they take aspects of the culture of their parents and aspects of the culture of Australia and make it their own. This happens to varying degrees, depending entirely on how much they identify with a given cultural practice.

As a Kiwi who has migrated to Australia, my experience is markedly different from the regards that the cultural divide between Australia and New Zealand isn't as great as that between India and Australia (or Fiji and Australia). But I still find some differences. For instance, Australians are far more overtly proud of their country internationally, whereas New Zealanders tend to be more reserved, aside from in rugby (either that or we're just picking our battles carefully). New Zealanders seem more to be more willing to embrace aspects of Maori culture, whereas Australians appear to be keeping indigenous culture at arms length (though I suspect that is because New Zealand is some 20 to 30 years ahead of Australia in terms of the journey of reconciliation, and also had a markedly different interaction between the indigenous culture and European settlers).

There's certainly some parts of Australian culture I admire - for instance I think Australians celebrate success far better than New Zealand does. We're more willing to cut tall poppies down, which ultimately I feel is a bad thing. However I'm proud of how much more liberal New Zealand is compared to Australia, and how far less religious we are.

It's certainly an interesting discussion, and one that needs to be hand. Just how do we decide our own culture.

It's always an awesome moment to see great talent get showcased and given a shot, really happy to see Guy and Kimbra do such awesome things together and bring a new, fresh style to things. It hits close to home, I myself am pursuing a career where it all starts with one chance/risk to get on a project and run with. I look forward to the short film! There are fans here in America!

Lovely article :) When I was living in Melb, I remember someone telling me that "Melbourne is like a woman. It changes constantly !" (referring to the weather...) Ever heard that one before? Well don't know if one should be offended by that but it made me laugh.
