Getting a Brazilian or bikini wax allows us to confidently flail about the beach (or, with the way that Mama Nature has been treating us: our local indoor pool) in our skimpiest bikini. Similarly, we can ‘rest’ assured that our little white g-string doesn’t resemble the top slice of an over-packed alfalfa sandwich, rather than a fine piece of lingerie. Basically, a decrease in ‘alfalfa sprouts’ directly correlates with a decrease in inhibitions…for about a week. Then, an increase in red spots and inflammation directly correlates with an increase in the amount of fabric used to cover one’s lady-land (hello Granny undies). What we want to achieve is a happy medium: tolerable re-growth, freedom of underwear choice, and most importantly, non-stop confidence and comfort. Don’t think it’s possible? Well, little miss glass-half-empty, allow me to rekindle your optimism.
Pre-Wax
I understand that planning ahead may not be your forte, but it is important that your waxing regime starts before the wax hits your skin. Cleanse the area thoroughly with an anti-bacterial cleanser such as Botani PhytoBody Wash (RRP $19.95).
After you’ve cleansed, exfoliate the area to get rid of dead skin cells and bacteria that may have set up camp below the surface. Both Urban Rituelle Botanical Body Scrub (RRP 34.95) and OP Therapy Sea Salt Glow (RRP $36) are great for this.
Okay, now that you’re all prepped, it’s time for your…
Wax
If you’re at a salon, make sure that the therapist is wearing plastic gloves, or has at least washed their hands with antibacterial soap before they touch your skin. Your pores will open during the waxing process, so you don’t want any form of bacteria making contact with your bare skin. If you’re doing a DIY wax, make sure you wear gloves (disposable plastic gloves from the supermarket will do), or disinfect your hands thoroughly.
Directly After Wax
Once the post-wax sting subsides, reach for Botani’s Phytoseptic (RRP $17.95). This must-have product is an anti-fungal, anti-bacterial AND anti-inflammatory in one. Oh, and did I mention that this triple threat is natural? Its antiseptic properties will keep the waxed area bacteria-free, and will draw out infections, thus preventing those nasty ingrown hairs. Meanwhile, the anti-inflammatory properties will settle that horrid post-wax itch. Apply Phytoseptic 2-3 times daily.
A’kin Unscented Pure Emergency Gel (RRP $22.95) is another great (natural) post-wax saviour. Its Aloe Vera will heal you, its Panthenol (Vitamin B5) will calm you, and its Chamomile extract will refresh you. But most importantly: its Horse Chestnut will stimulate microcirculation and reduce inflammation.
Three Days After Wax
You should now add exfoliation into your post-wax care regime. Once every two to three days put a dollop of body scrub onto an exfoliating glove (available from any supermarket or pharmacy) and massage into the skin in a circular motion.
Get In The Habit
In between waxes, it is important to keep the area clean and hydrated to reduce the risk of bacterial build up and irritation. Add Jurlique Calendula Cream (RRP $43 for 40ml) to your daily beauty routine, as it will not only repair fragile skin and give you that vital hydration boost, but also act as an antioxidant, which is ideal for sensitive areas such as your bikini line.
Happy waxing, Ladies!
